Sexism doesn't seem to be a very big deal in places like Latin America, doesn't it? Wrong. In face, Latin America (among many other societies) may be one of both the most dangerous and most objectifying towards women. It seems that such areas (especially including Brazil and Argentina) are able to offer women the "liberation" they need--freedom to express themselves both sexually and emotionally. But has this supposed "freedom" been perceived in the wrong way? In an interview with Lulu Garcia-Navarro, she was able to state this point, remarking how the women in the "string bikinis" are not all they appear to be. According to NPR, "Statistic show that about every two hours a woman is murdered in Brazil", in which the "seventh highest rate of violence against women in the world" exists. Not so liberating after all, huh? This perception that females in Latin American countries (mainly Brazil) are able to express themselves deems objectification and the premonition of women as nothing more than sexual beings. This is seen as something that can be taken advantage of, and leads to higher crime rates against women (especially violence, with a rate of 43% of females reporting such incidents in their own homes). So, next time you think that women in Brazil have greater rights of freedom, think again.
